Dizzy Gillespie mute in original case
with handwritten note from Dizzy to Maynard giving it
as gift.
Dear Maynard,
This is the only one I have besides the one I use.
But I can't find the felt tip, nor the cup that goes in the end.
I think Giardinelli can fix it. Much love Dizzy

Maynard Ferguson's Collection of Day Planners 1974 - 2006
Maynard always kept a day
planner, and referred to it everyday whether he was on tour or at
home. He often filled it in himself by hand with all the gigs and
travel distances. Sometimes he wrote the pay and sometimes he put
reminder notes for himself. The planner went with him everywhere
and usually had a current band member list, copy of the most
recent tour schedule and usually a photo of Flo.
"Day-At-A-Glance" and "Month-At-A-Glance"
With Maynard's signature and handwriting, inside and out.
Maynard never went anywhere without his date books. He wrote it
all down and loved to keep everything up-to-date. He noted gigs,
contracts, money, travel distance, days off etc. His final day
planner 2005-2006 has hand written notes and the last things he
did before he died. Notes about his final recording, his last week
at the Blue Note and time with his family.

This collection includes
Maynard’s Personal Day Planners
1974-1979, 1982-1986, 1989-1994, 1996, 1998, 2005, 2006.
The early collections were Ghurka and Cartier books with annual
inserts
and later years were separate books for each year.

Maynard and the
Kiwanis Boys Club |
Kiwanis Club Montreal Certificates of Merit
"Band Boy" MF - 12/23/1938
Certificate of Merit - 12/15/1941
Maynard loved to show these awards to everyone. He loved being in
the Kiwanis Boy's Club and kept the certificates on his office
wall at home. When Maynard was about 8 years old his father found
out that the local Kiwanis boys club was going to have a band for
underprivileged boys. Maynard's father went and asked if his 2
sons could play with the band, but because they were not
"underprivileged" MF's father insisted on paying for both of his
son's uniforms and instruments. The two boys were accepted and
this was the beginning of Maynard's recognition. The certificate
is signed by Capt H.G. Jones. A man who would go on to have a
profound effect on Maynard's life. Capt HG Jones discovered
Maynard at The Kiwanis Club, and by the age of 10, Maynard was the
(lead) trumpet and mascot for the Military band, marching out in
front of the band and playing powerful trumpet leads whilst
marching for miles in freezing temperatures. Maynard recalled that
Capt HG jones was probably the best teacher he ever had. Many,
including Maynard, guess that this is where he got his powerful
stamina. |
